You will be very restricted by the memory map of the typewriter judging by the photo. In a similar way, I noticed a lot of 9600 baud (etc) modems have 8031's in them. They are EPROM based too (though as people have mentioned that is easily overcome with a flash micro) but at least they have a serial port!
