As a freelance engineer, I have to spend my own money on tools, and up to £300 (USD 500) is usually easy to justify.

When trying to persuade clients to invest in tools I sometimes come across some serious insanity. I recently recommended using Subversion for software revision control (totally brilliant and free), but you need a designated server to host your repositories. This seems to be a complete stumbling block as the IT bods didn't want to let us use one of their servers, but we also couldn't get a requisition through for a new PC (£300 tops).
