It helped so often that I made it standard practice in my shop. I've never regretted it.

I got the idea, not from any great theoretical insight, but, rather, from the fact that the board sets (computers were not IBM-PC types back then) that were capacitor coupled to earth rather than having frame and signal grounds hard-connected, as they are in IBM PC's, seldom had troubles when there were electrical upsets, e.g. "live" ac lines momentarily shorting to a device or power-strip because a "suicide cord" (power cord with standard mains connector at one end and "alligator clips" at the other, or simply a device plugged into power where it shouldn't have been, etc, all of which seldom occurred, while the ones with direct connections between earth and frame often did.

I mentioned this here only because it's easy to do and easy to "undo" if necessary. YMMV, of course.
