CFs contain a microcontroller (probably much more powerful than the '51 to which one is going to connect to - what an irony of these times!) and it needs a nice reset - some of them need a nice and loooong reset (look at reset in PC). And recently a colleague of mine told me that he came across a CF which - ignoring the specs - did not work properly in 8-bit memory mode (but who cares these days - it worked OK in 16-bit and IDE modes...)
