Expand your thinking means that it is too narrow. Perhaps not due to any fault of your own, but maybe narrow versus broad experience or exposure to different technologies.

An example where parity, checksum, CRC, and ECC are used in memory would be transaction processing systems for checkpointing where the extra bit(s) are applied, using software, not hardware.
