If time does not permit that you do what you are asked to do, then just "taking it" is not the way to go. 1) tell your boss up front it can not be done in that time 2) whan you find out it takes a bit more time, go to the boss "protecting your job" by always estimating optimisticly will never get you anywhere. Once I stood up to a boss and said "it can not be done that fast", I was sure it would cost me my job, instead I heard "it is about time someone has the guts to tell me the truth". If you work for a "we need it by wednesday, whatever you say" boss, stand up to him/her. I have never been fired for doing so. I have, however, once lost a job because I would not at the interview agree to an unrealistic schedule. That company released the product in question two years later than what I estimated, never mind their "desired" schedule. The person hired to do the job at the managements schedule was laid off halfway through that process. Erik |
