However, it is a matter of required latency in displaying the values of all 200 slaves and the efficiency of the applied protocol, whether it is wise to use them all on one RS485 line, or to split it (either directly at the PC, using more ports and appropriate SW; or inserting "intelligent concentrators").

Also the geographical topology of the network might be prohibitive for using a single 200-slave branch; sometimes the tree arrangement is simply more feasible (e.g. 2 buildings, 10 rooms each, 10 endpoints in each).
