#108606 - Not good for commercial product? Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I am going to put an equipment from a well known manufacturer into my own project. Since it has no standard interface ... I decided to insert a microcontroller in its case to read the display and control its keys...
I can charge more for customers. While this is fine for a one-off or hobby project, you should think very carefully before adopting it in a commercial product! You have no idea whether the unit you use to develop your product is typical, nor of what tolerances you need to design to, nor how the unit might behave in unforseen circumstances... This kind of thing can be bad enough when you do have a proper OEM module with defined interfaces! Even having got one working, you are entirely at the mercy of the manufacturer - you have absolutely no guarantee whatsoever that they won't make some subtle change that will completely stop your "hack" from working. Why is it that you can't use an OEM unit that is properly designed and specified for design-in to 3rd party equipment? |
