Speaking of monitors, the OP mentioned he is using P89V51RD2 - it incorporates a version of Keil's FlashMon called softICE - contrary to FlashMon it uses up negligible system resources (zero XRAM) making use of the extra bootFLASH in a smart way - gives the feeling of almost-an-ICE. The PC-side software (THE debugger accodring to Andy's definition) is of course Keil.
