You CAN drive LEDS from different supplies, it takes a bit of thinking about, but it can be done. I have an exotic circuit I developed for roadsigns driven from MAX 7221's that worked very well with peak diode currents of 100mA. It also unloaded the 7221 so it wasn't overheated, and still gave current limiting.
