Oliver, you know I've had quite good luck with adding an extra 5V regulator to a design to power an LCD unit and then providing the interface signals to the module that come from a 3.3V MCU. In particular when the microcontroller is a SiLabs type the I/Os can be set to push-pull and the communications to the display works well.
