Haven't seen your example of tape stations that gets upgraded to file systems by Windows.
Or any other device (camera, soundcard, keyboard, router, ...) that shows up as a disk without having explicit support to enumerate as a disk. A lot of USB-connected devices (such as 3G modems) do initially show up as a CD-ROM to let you access required drivers. Then the driver issues a command to switch to the "normal" functionallity. Basically hell-on-earth for embedded developers. But nothing involving Microsoft. I very much wants to learn, so if you can post relevant links to Microsoft "helping out", I want to know about it. But once more - your "camera example" was not an example since the camera manufacturer designed the product explicitly to show up as a disk. And Microsoft wasn't part of it either, since your camera would have shown up as a disk with a number of other operating systems too. It's just a question of what USB-enumerated device types the OS has native support for. |
