#178731 - tape backup replacement |
A client of mine wanted me to repair his over 30 years old tape backup system for an old computer.
I inspected the tape drive and it uses a serial cable to transfer data from pc to tape drive and vice versa. I suggested replacing the tape drive with microcontroller and a flash card or memory stick which he seemed to like the idea. Thinking of it from the technical side, I doubt there is a ready made solution available on the market. My first thought is to spy on the serial communication side and make tape backup emulator using micro and a flash card to fool the computer to think it is still talking to a tape drive. Do you have any other suggestions, which tools to use etc... ? Mahmood |
