Correct me if I'm wrong but if the enviroment is noisy enough to distort I2C it will also be to noisy for RS232 right?
Although RS232 is a lot slower.

Seems to me that a differential solution (RS485) is the way to go?

The enviroment in which the device has to work is on stage (music).
