I think your problem is that you are using a "basic '51"
The "basic '51" with T0 and T1 only can not count from two inputs AND run a UART (at least not simultaneously). Trying to make double use of T1 (counter and baud) will lead to some convoluted code so I suggest you get hold of a derivative with a T2. There is a plethora of those: xxx52, xx53, xx54, xx55, 89c51Rxx, P89V51xx, P89C66x and many more. You CAN make T1 work as a counter, reconfigure T1 as a baudrate generator and then transmit, I am not saying it is not possible, but to go through that hassle to use a processor that cost 5 cents less than another with T2 - is it worth it?
