When you switch it on, there will be a large inrush of current; you will also get inductive "ringing" when switching - which can cause large voltage transients. All of these could easily upset a poorly designed microcontroller circuit... Solenoids & motor contactors are also big inductors, and there's been plenty of discussion of similar problems with them - so search for "solenoid" and "contactor" And, as Erik said, see the FAQ about noise.
