Language is only useful if you can communicate with it...
Was it Winston Churchill that said that the UK and the US were two nations divided by a common language. The US and UK easily communicate in writing, but sometimes with great difficulty when speaking (try a missisippian and a cockney in the same room). It makes no sense to "bend fold and mutilate" the written language out of sheer laziness. Two defenses for SMS on cellphones: 1) "typing" with a 10 pos keyboard is a real pain in the Gluteus Maximus. 2) there is only one person that has to decipher it. Two reasons not to use SMS in the forum: 1) typing with a full keyboard is a breeze. 2) for every bit of time the ONE typist saves, oodles and bunches of readers must spend time deciphering. Oh by the way: If you use SMS to show you are "in" most of us can not answer since we evidently are not. Erik |
