I have been selling and supporting various 8051-based boards (see www.BlueEarthLLC.com ) that can be used for "Development boards" for 15 years.

A few things I have learned:

  • No matter what you put on (or leave off) the board, someone (everyone?) will want something else. I think that may be one of Murphy's laws...

  • That said, sales depend far more on product support, application support, example applications, etc., than on product price or features (assuming that they are at least competitive).

  • If I had $100 for every time I was asked something like "I wired the CPU port pins directly to my 12V relays and now the ports all read 0 and why don't they work anymore," I could have retired by now.

Just having a product that can be used as a control board allows you to not only sell that board, but get customers that want to prototype their project using your board, and then purchase a custom control, e.g., GainTRAC specifically designed for their application.
