#564 - RE: Which 8051 C Compiler? |
Hi Mark,
I recently found myself in a similar position. I am in the process of evaluating a number of the 'c' compilers available. I am working with the Franklin, Tasking, Hi-Tech, sdcc and System51 compilers at present. A lot may depend on what development environment you like. There are however a number of differences in the approach and some may suit one person more than another. Hi-Tech has a 'Dos' interface that somehow seems a little 'chunky' in today's world. SDCC is a 'freeware' product and can be downloaded off the network. It is the compiler only but now has an environment interface to XEMACS if you should require. Franklin has been around quite a while and is a very stable product but I have not got too far on the evaluation. I have looked at the Tasking compiler (demo version) and it seems to be pretty good as does the development environment. I have used System51 for some time now. It is less expensive than most of the others. It has a fairly good environment and a pretty reasonable compiler. There are some limitations but the manufacturer is always willing to discuss these and make improvements. After my latest round of requests has been implemented, I think it will be pretty competitive with most. To get a feel for the operation of the various compilers, I would suggest you download the demonstration versions and see which of the development environments suits you best. Regards, IAN LOWE |
