That's why 8051 manufacturers don't give away free tools: eg, if NXP gave away a free compiler, there would be no way they could stop you from using it on any other manufacturer's 8051-based devices!

Note 1: Do Atmel actually give a free 'C' compiler for the AVR?
Last time I looked, only the assembler was free & provided by Atmel - for a 'C' compiler, you had to either pay-up for a commercial product, or use the free GCC compiler...

Note 2: How much support is actually provided by Atmel? Isn't it mostly by "The Community"...?
