#129655 - is an external UART cheaper?
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I don't think so ...

It might be less costly to use a dual UART of some sort on the DS89C450 or whatever. However, it's hard to beat the cost and performance of the little 20-pin MCU's.

The DS89C450 allows you to set the length of an external bus cycle as needed, so you can use a UART that ordinarily couldn't live at the pace of the DS89C450. That might avoid some of the software overhead involved in handshaking the parallel interface.
