There is no reason whatsoever to OR the inputs. the KBI does that function beautifully. If you use the OR, you will have the very same problem (the interrupt does not disappear till all keys are released).

I am now using a timer, it was far less hassle, but still disappointing, the KBI held such promise. in not having to poll the IO when, possibly nothing of interest was happening on the IO.
"using a timer" is the way to go; however the overhead "when, possibly nothing of interest was happening" can be VERY minimum. What you do (assuming you enable cols and read rows) is in the very top of your timer ISR enable ALL cols and if all rows still off, get out of dodge. If you leave the all cols enabled till a key is seen (I do), the code to get out is about 3 lines, no 'scan' needed.
