took pattern generator out of a text book on 8051 microcontrollers. The writer of the book said it was tested and did in fact work. I just wanted to know why design so poorly.

There are so many books out there filled with outright CRAP! One experience I have of falling for it was a book called something like "the PC ISA bus" and using it to design an ISA card the card could not be inserted because the drawing of the mechanical dimensions of the card in the book was wrong.
