There is a saying something like "you need to learn to crawl before you can walk"

Start with something basic and get the basic issues clear in your head doing some simple things before you start getting into "heavy" stuff. Have you e.g. done "blinky" and made it work, then made a few changes to it and made them work. Then go in working with some basic UART examples, then the timers ...
