AT89C51ED2 contains 2kb of internal EEPROM.
I have no idea how EEPROM of the derivative is organized. Probably there is an auto-erase capability at the byte level opposite to Flash which is based on page level. If so then the usage of EEPROM is more safe and appropriate. You should ask Atmel for details.
