A domestic lamp dimmer works at probably no more than 500 W - 2A. The triac in question is a 40 A one - a 40W bulb is 0.4% of this triac rating. For a domestic dimmer, 40W is 8 % of the rating of the triac, and generally they will fire. IF you ever actually tried it, you would see most dimmers actually struggle with such small currents.


So, as I said. Insufficient load.
