Erikm might call them deviates not derivatives, but I think they can still be very usefull. Just pay good attention to the datasheet, reference designs and application notes.
I have no doubt they are excellent processors, they are just going to confuse the $#!^ out of you. You will have to check every little sordid detail because experience does not count, but is a hindrance. e.g. they are the only processors called '51 that have clock input on XTAL2.
