There is no nonvolatile memory inside the 8052 (is it with Basic or not). Upon reset, the internal variables are reset to their default values; baudrate is determined by autobauding (that's why you need to press the spacebar).
Let me ask a couple of questions: do you have EPROM attached? How much and at which addresses (8000h+ or also in the extensions area, 2000h+ and 4000h+)? Is there also the high voltage source and circuit needed for EPROM programming? What happens if you write a line number and some command, say "10 PRINT 3"?
