A disadvantage of a watchdog that only provides a reset is, that it cannot recover circuitry from typical lock-up
many modern chips have the reset pin bidirectional so you can reset everything. Your favorite external puppy can as well.

if a total reset does not 'clear' your system, how can a power cycle?
