 I use svn for FPGA and microcontroller stuff every day. While we use Altium, we don't use a version-control system with the PCB layouts (for reasons that are more political than technical). I use svn for my personal PCB projects at home. I can give you a detailed answer to all of your questions, but it'll be longer than what one might reasonably want to see in a forum post.
