| I've worked on and off for over 20 years as a consultant. Virtually all my work was new development work. Some projecte were to make new products by using some of the parts of an old project but only really once did I agree to take a project that was a "fixup" job. In that case it was to take over firmware development from an engineer that left the company about 1/2 way through the work. I ended up basically starting over with a much better compiler and tool chain and the engineering manager liked what I did so much that they hired me away from the job shop as a full time employee and made me the company firmware lead.
