I kind of suspect that the 9-bit mode may have started as manual use/abuse of partity. If that is the case it is ironical because I wrote a design idea published in EDN in 1998 that implemented the 9th bit on a PC by manipulating/abusing the parity bit. (Also an application note for Cypress). |
