probably will like something as embedded web server. So task is to build in web server into serial devices or intermediate layer into Ethernet-to-serial converter, or driver into PC. PC is  best place, i think. Assuming that end devices can be different types - from complicated to simplest - converter is second place. Something user programmable -http://tibbo.com/products - for example. (but i used only non-programmable device).
