I did a bit more research and it looks like my lack of problems with C function pointers is simply this: my old compiler doesn't do the fancy data overlaying that gives rise to the problem in the first place. So, in a sense, I've been lucky.

In any case, it's good to be aware of this problem in case I ever blow my lunch money on a compiler update.
