The main reason people keep asking for 8255s seems to be not for any intrinsic merit of the part itself, but because they are available and cheap in the second-hand stores of non-US/European markets.

Similarly, such people are not using the latest and/or fastest 8051's, and probably haven't even heard of 3V operation.

So the question is not so much whether to do it, but how to get it into those markets!
