Having played the violing since I was about 7 or 8 years old, I learned to tune the A string to a pitchfork at 440 Hz and tune the adjacent strings (D and E) to where they didn't "beat" with the A.  After that, I tuned the G to a fifth below the D.  It's not hard to learn, but it is a matter of trusting your ear.  a fifth is a natural harmonic of the tonic, so it beats until it's right.
