| An optical InfraRed interrupter might be all you need on each side of the bed if the goal is to detect when a patient is attempting to get out of bed.  if there is a reflector on the foot-end of the bed, and a transmitter and receiver at the head end, it would detect when the patient's leg is in the path.  Those are pretty cheap as a simple interrupter, but if you go to a moving mirror or some other scheme, the cost goes up.  
 Since the beam is IR, it wouldn't be readily visible, BTW. RE |
