| First, I think this thread belongs to the "mainstream" message board, it IS '51 related (even '51 SPECIFIC).
Then, I would mention the Keil's baudrate calculator (link). Also I would list alternative terminal emulators, my favorites are Terminal by Bray and TeraTerm. For beginners, especially the Bray's is much much easier to use (-> less frustration). Ian could add "reference" terminal emulator for Linux. There is also certainly at least one good for the Macs. Also for the MAX232 I would mention that there are - clones, at least one of them with different polarity of one cap - versions (and clones of them) requiring only 100nF ceramic=unpolarised caps -> RECOMMENDED - capless version (as mentioned by Sasha; however I would not adhere to it as the MAX232 clones are much more widespread) - full 3/5 versions in both directions (even expanded 5/5 versions) - pumpless versions (these are probably historically older) - need +-12V supply (that's why the PC power source still has -12V!) - 3.3V and dual-supply versions Mention the hardware/software handshake and it's meaning. Mention different connections of the DSUB9 connector - you connected it as DCE ("modem"), for that a simple "straight" cable could be used, simply crimping a "crimpable" DSUB9 male and a DSUB9 female onto a piece of 9-lead flat cable. But many use it as DTE (as in "PC"), a male, requiring "nullmodem" (crosswired) cable. The most "pervert" is to use various mirrored connectors, nonstandard connectors etc. Jan Waclawek |
