Charles Bannister thank you very much for the help you provided during my project .
The project ran like a gem. here is what I did. I took two aluminium bars coated them with epoxy to insulate them completely from each other. Then to maintain equal spacing I used a C type electrical bus bar spacers, they leave a space of around 5mm and are made of some kind of polycarbonate. I connected the leads from the bar in place of the C in the RC oscillator for cd4060.. then use 2051 to count the pulses,.. TDAAA>.. project done. Yeah I made a VB front end too.. it looked nice. hope some one can use this info to do some measurement.
