To detect a white strip using a retroreflective sensor would be one option. Wenglor / Germany is one brand which can be looked up on the net. In fact there is a distributor here in Chennai for Wenglor. ( You get models that look like a normal 12mm dia. proximity switch . The sensitivity of these units can adjusted from a feww mm to 200mm )
