the 8344 is a Microcontroller with an on-chip communication controller. It is a member of the RUBI-44 Family and was designed for applications which requires "local intelligence at remote notes and communication capability among these distributed nodes" (Source: INTEL 8-Bit Embedded Controller Handbook).
