You probably want to convert it to ASCII. BCD isn't going to help much if you want to display it since you'd have to eventually convert BCD to ASCII anyway.

Is display the 16-bit value in hexidecimal on the LCD an option? Displaying a 16-bit value in hex is fairly easy.
