As you said you are a total beginner, then in such a case start with ATMEL flash processors.

You said that you have already assembled a programer board. You need to tell us more about it. (Because its only the universal programer that can entertain almost everthing).

Assuming that you would like to start with ATMEL, go to <atmel.com> and dwonload there package for home made PC based falsh micro programer, the software files also have test file you can burn into micro to test.
