There are usefull examples for you.

Divide your project in small portions.

For example first of all connect a LCD to your 8051 micro and display some strings (" Hello World " etc.)

Then try to display any numeric value lets say Seconds on LCD.

Last add a counter input to your micro and write a simple program which counts the rising edges of square wave input. And of course display it on your LCD.

Looks simple. Isn't it? :)
