Your information was most helpful, thank you. The printf functions were only present for diagnostic reasons and will be stripped out later, the 2^N shifting is a valuable optimization.

As for the timer, it was a convenient hack, this small code set will later be stripped and put into a bigger program with a timer based solution ... I'm trying to develop a better understanding of ADC's and interrupts ... this is a new area for me.
