What determines the speed of the system? What is its exact speed? Which motor is the governing factor? How stabile (how much short-term and long-term variation is there, e.g. in femtoradians/second per terafortnight) is its speed over time? How precise must the relationship be (30%, 3%,, 20 ppm 3 ppb, 1/10^50)? How much loop delay can the system tolerate, i.e. must the second motor track within a microsecond or two, or can it wait, say two minutes before settling? ... how about half an hour?
It's often easier to divide a frequency rather than to multiply. Moreover, if the two motors must remain in precise synchronization, perhaps it's easier to control them from a common frequency reference. RE |
