Thank you, Jan & Erik, for the eye opening insight. I'm not sure where I ever got the idea that I could just throw a 64k Eprom into the mix and expect to use the entire space as data (lookup storage). Rather than carve up my pretty little SBC I think I'm going to try scaling back the number of fonts to fit in the back of the ram chip. I had thought about using I2C EEproms but I have the nasty suspicion that they may be a tad slow, especially since none of the accesses will be sequential.
In light of Erik's suggestion what I also may wind up doing is installing a Dallas 87C520, which has 64K of flash, execute from MCU and map the majority of code memory for the font tables. Also, the boost in speed can't hurt, either. Hal |
