Last year I wrote some c-code to poll 4 optical coders (directly conected to port pins) and increment/decrement the appropriate variable. It was designed to change the values of 4 output voltages (set over GPIB by computer) by turning the encoder knobs on the frontpanel. You can set two parameters to control dead angle and speed of the encoders.
