Thanks for your help- I cast a "storage" variable using the XDATA type, and at the beginning of the program, set the variable to be used equal to the value in XDATA, and if it is changed again in setup, set the XDATA variable equal to the changed variable. This eliminated any problems I would encounter due to the "slow" XDATA access problem. Works like a charm.
