If you visit the New Micros web site, easily located by Googling for <NMIY-0031>, and then look at the documentation for the NMIY-0031 SBC, you'll see they've done that. They provide both RS232 and RS422 devices. You can do the same, using RS485 devices in place of the RS422 devices, which are, in fact, very similar. You might even consider using their board, as it's very reasonably priced.
